theleaveswant: text "make something beautiful" on battered cardboard sign in red, black, and white (bad decision dinosaur)
( Jan. 10th, 2012 11:05 pm)
Ugh, last week. Don't even ask. (Seriously, don't.)

* Snowflake challenge, Days 3-10 )

* Stolen from [personal profile] commodorified, because fun.
Pick up the nearest book to you.
Turn to page 45.
The first sentence describes your sex life in 2012.

I am not unusually surrounded by bookpiles so grabbed either the topmost or the most protuberant of the three closest, which were:
Come, Thou Tortoise by Jennifer Grant: "Here is something to do if you are unslept and have a ponytail: Bring that ponytail around under your nose like a moustache."
Pretty in Punk: 25 Punk, Rock, and Goth Knitting Patterns by Alyce Benevides and Jaqueline Milles with photos by Rob Benevides: [full-page photograph of a young white woman with downcast eyes crouching gargoyle-fashion on what appears to be a rooftop in front of a background of industrial twilight (low sun, orange sky, tattered clouds, and shabby buildings) wearing a black leather aviator's cap with goggles, silver eye makeup, spiked collar with ring, black fabric bat wings, layered fishnets and ripped pantyhose, bikerish boots, and the featured knitting pattern, a "cobweb-inspired" "loose-knit tight-fit holey jumper" called "Goth Girl", over a black tank top]
and
The Slave by Laura Antoniou: "'Now,' he said, when she returned, 'you're in serious trouble.'"

* More Joy Day is coming up on Thursday. I have some ideas about what I'm going to do.

* Handmade meme people (you remember who you are?) who have not already PMed me with your addresses, please do so soon. I have or shortly will have stuff to mail you.
Title: Jealous of Your Cigarette
Music: "Jealous of Your Cigarette" by Hawksley Workman
Length: 2:35
Video source(s): *deep breath* Better Than Chocolate, Black Snake Moan, Blade Runner, Bound, Charlie's Angels, Clay Pigeons, Confidence, Death Proof, Dirty Pretty Things, Domino, Eastern Promises, Fight Club, Gattaca, Ginger Snaps, Grease, Hard Core Logo, Heathers, Kalifornia, Kill Bill Vol. 2, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Men with Brooms, New Waterford Girl, Out of Sight, Planet Terror, Prey for Rock & Roll, Pulp Fiction, Push, Reservoir Dogs, Secretary, Shortbus, Smokin' Aces, St. Trinian's, Strange Days, Stranger Than Fiction, Suspicious River, The Usual Suspects, Walk the Line, Watchmen, Wilby Wonderful, Women in Trouble, X-Men, X-Men 2: X-Men United, Young People Fucking . . . I think that's all of them?
Character(s): um . . . lots
Kink(s): drugs/aphrodisiacs
Summary: Frenetic multi-fandom vid of smoking (mostly cigarettes, some spliffs and cigars) in Western/English-language (mostly North American) feature films

OR

How does a lifetime non-smoker and longtime anti-smoking nag reconcile knowing the dangers and hating the smell of tobacco smoke with finding the visual and auditory sensory dimensions (at least on film) painfully sexy? I still don't know.
Notes: Contains some shots of underage or canonically related characters that were not necessarily originally sexual but appear sexualized in this context; a few shots of self-harm with lighters or lit things (or many, if you count inhaling carcinogens etc.); various nonconsensual actions (blowing smoke in someone's face, taking away their cigarette, shaking them, lighting a cigarette off their burning hand, etc.). Also lots of quick cuts, sped-up clips, flares of light, and some specifically NSFW images and audio. Basically, ALL THE NOTES.
I was going to wait to post this with the other vids I'm making for that line (yes I am going for a five vid line during amnesty) but looked at the project again tonight while finishing my Festivid and decided it was ready to post. Did not know how to remove letterboxing when I was clipping for this video, not going to go back and correct it now. Big thanks to everybody who suggested sources for me to look at, and know that if your suggestion did not make it in it's not because it wasn't good (I just hit and then fell over the point of TOO MUCH SOURCE).

Really quite impressed (and pleased) with how successful this initiative (15 days of fanlove challenges) is so far! Yay Aka & Luce & Ande!

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Drop a link to your post in the comments.

blah blah blah why I don't cross-post much )
Anyway:
1. way more than three fics I am fond or proud of )

2. I am generally pretty smug about my playlist/mix-making skills, so every mix I've posted gets a self-rec, but my particular favourites-of-the-moment are the two most recent ones (If We're Not Horses [due South/Dollhouse] and No Two Snowflakes [BSG]) and General Issue (Life or Death We Want You) [The Losers], and I'm also very proud of parts of the lengthy meta for Empty Lots and Early Graves (Murder Ballad Mix), although I'm kicking myself for forgetting HorrorPops' "Highway" and The Creepshow's "Long Way Down" and "Undead Eyes" when I was making it (they'll have to go on the sequel, along with Die Mannequin's "Dead Honey").

3. I am genuinely disappointed not to have recieved any online feedback on Media Erotometrics, the multi-fandom video installation project I did for a conference in March 2011, so I do want to rec that as a plea for attention. I know it's a commitment to watch (an hour long) and the technical quality is not great (I do plan to produce an improved/updated version using better and more varied video source and better software at some point) but for an absurdly ambitious first vidding project I don't think it's too shabby, and I'm pretty pleased with some of the commentary I worked in (assuming that anyone else reads it the way that I hope they will, of course).

Promotional piggyback! Go offer and bid on stuff at [community profile] scarleteenfans auction raising money to support the sexual health education site. You are particularly welcome to bid on my offers (the usual fanmixes and custom knitting work--no bids yet so you can probably win them cheap cheap cheap) and to outbid me on the offers I've bid on, because I cannot really afford to win them all right now.
Find enclosed two mini-picspams (four pictures each) for the [community profile] kink_bingo December mini-challenge (tiny fanwork bingo), using stills from the first two episodes of Flashpoint. I apologize for the somewhat scuzzy image quality; I'm still getting control of my new computer (think I've figured out now how fix the interlacing problem, but can't be arsed to go back and re-cap). No standard content notes apply; picspams also feature uniforms, guns, and cameras.

Mini-picspam #1: Authority Figures )

Mini-picspam #2: Exhibitionism )
[livejournal.com profile] stainofmylove started this "Holiday wishlist meme" thing a few years ago (rules below, but basically you post a list of stuff, fannish, abstract, or material, that you want, and grant each other's wishes if you can) and I think it is pretty great, so I am going to do my best to participate and hope that some of you lovely folks on Dreamwidth will get into it too. I'm not sure why this has to be a "holiday"-specific thing, myself, but it does work better if everybody's playing at once, even though there are really no time limits, so I guess this arbitrarily selected season is as good as any. (SoML's list, btw, is here.)

The Rules )

My Wishlist )
Who has two thumbs and is eager to receive her Festivids assignment? I offered a pretty long list of fandoms, so I'm curious to see what I'll get matched on. In the meantime I'm keeping those itchy vidding digits busy making stuff for [community profile] kink_bingo, to post during amnesty, while also waiting for word on actual paying work (should probably send off a round of applications for seasonal retailmonkeywork before the window closes).

Speaking of [community profile] kink_bingo, I'm pretty proud of what I accomplished this year. it ain't bragging if it's true, Dan Bern says Cassius Clay said )

Thinking about whether to sign up for any other challenges this season (dSSS, Yuletide, three_ships, etc.), or to just focus on what's already on my plate (the aforementioned + finishing auctioned music mixes, podfic, and as-yet unclaimed knitting project from [livejournal.com profile] helpsomalia, and leaning toward the latter because I don't know what curveballs life might throw at my head. I will be on the lookout for small promptfests and the like, when I have spoons, and may try hosting a few or participating more in [community profile] duesouth_kink and [community profile] fic_promptly.

On that approximate note: I know I'm late jumping in on Five Acts Exchange Round Five, but I thought I'd give it a try. Basically, to play, you post a list of five acts/kinks/tropes/themes you like to read about to your own journal, along with a list of fandoms and ships you prefer to read, and then link the list back to the master list above, so that people can find it and leave you ficcy presents (or potentially presents in any medium--it's geared towards commentfic but I don't think the rules disallow other fanworks). Anyway, this is what I'm in the mood for right now )

ETA: Five Acts is fun! )

Also, I renewed my Dreamwidth subscription for another six months! Yaaaay paid features and warm feelings of supporting a good cause!

142 icons from screenshots from Whip It (2009) film and deleted scenes (my middle name is "Overboard"), mostly of Hurl Scouts and other ink-bedecked derby girls, for the "tattoos/tattooing" prompt on my second Kink Bingo card. Mostly just cropped and colour-adjusted stills with a few animated .gifs; feel free to use as bases, add text, whatever. Credit is appreciated but not required.

Here be 126 icons of people wearing leather jackets (with at least a smidge of leather in every frame) from the movies Bound, Death Proof, The Lookout, Penelope, and Planet Terror (kind of a random assortment, I know, but I was originally going for a multifandom vid and then an icon set from a wide range of films, but I got snap-happy with the first few sources and opted to give up on completism in source range . . . for now). Icons may contain spoilers for movies and Planet Terror set has some blood and 'splodeyness in it, but no standard content notes apply. Mostly just cropped and colour-adjusted stills with a few gifs etc.; feel free to use as bases, add text, whatever. I'm not worried about credit on these ones.

ETA: Apologies to anyone who's tried to view this and been unable; been having some trouble with the embed. I think I've fixed it for reals now?
ETA2: Annie should have been a deer! Or a fox. Or an alpaca? I don't know. They were all going to be dogs originally but then Abed didn't want to be a dog.
This has actually been in the works for a while now—decades if we're talking about keeping a mental association web for this trope, and at least a year composing a playlist with intention to share—but the announcement of the new "danger" square and increased scope for fandom-nonspecific works in this year's [community profile] kink_bingo told me it was time.

The songs and lengthy (very lengthy) analyses in this post contain death; non-consensual sex and violence, occasionally graphic and mostly directed at women; and some oblique talk about ableism and mental illness.

Polly, Pretty Polly, will you come along with me? )
Before we are married, some pleasure to see . . . )
Here is a picspam for the "silk velvet feathers fur" square on my first 2011 Kink Bingo card curated and compiled from hundreds of screenshots I took from the dvd of Red (2010), mostly of Ivan and Victoria though other characters do appear (and if you called this a 'ship manifesto for an Ivan\Victoria/Sarah\Frank sedoretu, I would not disagree). I tried to focus on all the big fluffy fur coats and fur hats and other fancy clothes and luxurious materials, because there are a lot of them (nearly everything Victoria and Ivan wear looks tantalizingly touchable) but I got rather distracted, as I think the cinematographer did, by their beautiful, beautiful faces. Some violence; no other standard content notes apply, but broad-strokes spoilers for the film lurk within.
images and descriptions/commentary behind the cut )

In conclusion, there should be more fic for this movie. Thank you.
Kinda wary about how to post this, because I want people to see it but I'm hesitant about connecting this journal to my real name (not that I do a very good job of keeping the two separate otherwise . . .). Ah well.

Remember that twenty-minute video installation project I was working on for the Ethnographic Appetites/Feeding the Senses conference/exhibition at York University? Well, I finished it, on time for the March 12th conference, only it's three times as long as I said it would be (one hour and fourteen seconds). Oops (what can I say, I kept falling in love with dialogue scenes, and those eat up time like time-eating locusts). This was the first video-editing project that I've completed all on my own, and a wildly ambitious one at that, so the learning curve was steep. I can see a lot of things that I'd do differently if I did it again, clumsy cuts I'd like to finesse and material I'd like to integrate (so many clips I just didn't have time to collect), but given the givens I'm pretty satisfied with what I was able to accomplish. My humble thanks to everyone who pointed me at or gave me access to sources, and deepest, wettest gratitude to the creators of [community profile] kink_bingo, [personal profile] eruthros and [personal profile] thingswithwings, for providing such invaluable resources as the [community profile] kink_wiki and the Ridiculous Giant Kink Bingo Playlist, without which this project could never have been completed.

list of sources (by segment, in order of first appearance) )
My plan was to stay in as much as possible this weekend to work on the Paying Gig and to save my spoons for the next three which will be busy-busy (I'm already double- or triple-booked at one or more points each next weekend and the one two after, and the one between is Headstones Time). That hasn't quite worked out so far, mostly because our new roommates MJ (human), Alaska (old lady poodle dog), Beowulf (pushy cat), and Shiloh (dim bulb cat, who is either lost in the dark downstairs right now or attempting to echolocate) moved in for real today, and between helping to move things in and move things around and assemble Ikea furniture (and, tbh, plotting my C6Dbb in chat with fellow participants--thanks again for helping me pick a bunny!--and watching Festivids vids, see below) ate up more of the day and evening than anticipated. Sigh.

[community profile] festivids went live today! I didn't participate, but I did upload a couple of sources to a secret source place for vidders to use, so I feel a little like I contributed anyway. I've really enjoyed almost every link I've clicked on. these are some of my favourites in approximate order of increasing adoration )
So I've been watching Lost Girl, right? And it's still cheesy and ridiculous but mostly, apart from the absurd fat-hate in the second episode, it does a pretty good job of avoiding fail (at least it tries *so hard* that I want to offer it a Milkbone and a scratch behind the ears). In particular, the series' dedication to sex positivity and female sexual agency--manifested in the premise of a female protagonist whose supernatural abilities and, often, survival depend on feeding off others' libidinal energy but who is not reduced to a victim or an addict but who actively enjoys sex and whose choice between a prospective male love interest and a female one was, for as long as the angst-hungry machine of genre TV narrative conventions allowed, "both"--is pretty exceptional. This is why the appalling, and appallingly cliched, kink negativity in last week's episode was not just disappointing but actually surprising. summary of offending incident = spoilers )

This bothers me enough for what it is in itself (a baldly pathologizing sentiment); it bothers me more for what it is in the context of a media meta-narrative (bad guys = perverts & vice versa, lazy storytelling); and it saddens and confuses me because of its program-specific context (Bo is supposed to be such an ambassador for broad sexual appetites, and she suggested a safeword prior to enjoying a raucous one-night-threesome in a previous episode; why is she so down on this? why doesn't she distinguish between what the baddies are doing in the club and consensual SM?). The part that actually rather hurts me, though, is that this time they're not just maligning abstract concepts to which I have an intellectual affiliation. They're doing it to actual, local, human communities that I and many of my friends belong to.

I know Lost Girl doesn't claim to be set in Toronto. The characters have mostly accepted that they're in Canada, I think, after the whole "across the border" execution issue, though the series is still faking up details & aiming for Generic North American City, Unspecified Region, Fictionworld. But come on, who do they think they're fooling? They may not be as explicit as Flashpoint (which, for all that they may have dodged actually using the word "Toronto" until--I think?--the second season finale inside not!Maple Leaf Gardens, never really pretended to be anywhere else: within the first sixteen minutes of the series, we're shown the inside of the Spadina-University subway line, with stop announcements; Timmie's cups; Canada flags, "Metropolitan Police" badges and red trouser stripes; Ontario license plates on familiar EMS vehicles; and, oh yeah, throbbing luminescent cock of our nation, the CN Tower), but the locations are easy for anyone to recognize who knows what they're looking for (like that walk'n'talk down Queen West at the end of the pilot, hello!). Which means that goth club is supposed to be a Toronto goth club (it isn't, not a real one; the interiors are mostly The Opera House with some overstated set decoration and I dunno about the alley), and the shit they're saying about kinky people they're saying about Toronto kinky people.

Now, I'm not saying that all the goths or all the kinksters or all the dwellers of the overlap in this or any city are good and loving people. There are far too many folks who fit those bills for me to vouch for them all personally, and there are certainly some dense and unpleasant specimens in the sub-clusters of people I have actually met. But it does smart more than usual when TPTB aren't thumbing their noses just at people who like the same stuff you like but at you and your friends, more specifically (and maybe I'm spoiled not to have encountered this before, it's never occurred to me to ask people who live in big American cities where ALL THE TV happens). I'm sure it wasn't personal, just another symptom of how much many people think they know about kink and how little they care that there are actually millions of people in the world who do choose to do it and deliciate in it.

I'm not even sure where I'm going with all this tealdeer anymore, except perhaps to put it out there: Hey TV-making people? We're here, we're queer (well, some of us), and we'd be happy to look over your scripts and tell you whether they're bullshit before you hurt us by putting them on all those screens.

( May. 10th, 2010 01:35 pm)
ETA: Clarification: suggestions and alternative readings of scenes to use are appreciated, but what I'm really looking for is someone to make the vidlet, because I don't know how and don't have time to learn.

I have a very short-notice request to make of someone with an interest in kink and/or scholarship and some vidding experience or ambition: I'm presenting a paper called "Playing Dirty: Bawdy Thoughts for Kinky Anthropology" at the Undressing the Bawdy conference at York this Saturday (link goes to call-for-papers; they don't seem to have another website. It's free, open to the public and there'll be snacks if anyone's interested in attending), and since I have access to a projector I would like show a little video.

I'm looking for a short (1-2 minutes?) clip sequence of "ha ha kinky" moments in media--moments where kink practices and identities are played for laughs and characters are teased/accused (with or without hostility) for kink desires or experience. Specific examples I'm thinking of include Sophie and Nate at the baggage search in Leverage 1x08 and the handcuff gag at the end of 2x07; George buying a cage in Being Human 2x04; the discussion about Tempura Joe & Chanel!Sierra asking Ivy for a spanking in Dollhouse 2x01; Dean's meeting with the Chief in whatever episode of Supernatural that was; the PVC mountie, surfeit of handcuffs, greedy bottom etc. in Due South 1x07/08; that recent episode of Castle with the pro-Dommes; the spanking machine in that episode of CSI:NY with Ted Raimi; the dentist song in Little Shop of Horrors . . . I'm sure there are some good examples in Mythbusters too.

What I'm hoping to accomplish with this is mostly to illustrate and support arguments I make in my abstract about perversion, dirt and the bawdy joke:
BDSM (bondage and discipline, domination and submission, sadomasochism) and associated “kinky” practices and subjectivities appears to be gaining in scholarly and popular attention. However, these bodies most frequently enter and exit the conversation in the guise of a ribald joke. What about kink practices, framed explicitly by self-identifying participants as play which engages and agitates cultural logics around power, pleasure and pain, makes it so funny—or so unsettling that its potency must be discharged in humour? What repercussions do this risibility and this polluting association with dirt and obscenity have for people who engage in these practices and who identify as kinky? For those who study them? What about those of us (few, at present) who do both?
I'm also going to be talking quite a bit about "pervertibles" as a practice of bricolage/tactical borrowing and how when you approach the world kinkily you can find kink everywhere, and making some handwavy connections with reader reception and fandom (more or less supported depending whether I have time to read any Henry Jenkins or whatever--suggestions of quick-read resources for this appreciated).

I know it's eleventh-hour, but I'd be very grateful if somebody could help me out with this and I'm willing to pay with DW points or a trade of services (knitting? music mix? fic? podfic? other suggestions?).
