It's [community profile] kink_bingo time again! I wasn't sure what my participation in that would look like this year, or if I'd even manage to finish a bingo during the challenge period (I didn't last year), as my ability to words and especially to fiction!words has been dormant for some time. At first when I got my card I didn't have any idea what to do with it, but then I remembered that I can a) draw and b) use original characters/make shit up on the spot, and also noticed what a marvelous simultaneous double line bingo I'd been granted with columns 1 and 4, and I accidently became the first person to complete a bingo this year.

my card, for reference )

Below are five pencil drawings with image descriptions/notes. All feature unnamed original characters except for #2, which has a mix of original characters and characters from Laura Antoniou's The Killer Wore Leather. None of the standard KB content notes apply and they're all pretty much G-rated (no bare bums or anything!).

Now and then I'll read a story—a good one, often one where it's clear from the level and quality of detail in other places that the author has done research, made a serious effort to know whereof ze speaks—and I'll be sitting there, scrolling happily along, until one of the characters gets tattooed, and then *brake screech* Some minor or major inaccuracy will throw me out of the story, sometimes irretrievably. I have five tattoos myself now, so I'm moderately well-acquainted with the process, and I notice when somebody's Doing It Wrong (for example, describing the process—not the sensation—as “burning”, or talking about changing bandages on a tattoo that's still bleeding two weeks after it was applied).

I'm not sure why this in particular is such a peeve for me, when I let some other kinds of errors slide more easily, but it is. It bothers me even more in 'professional' media, where producers can reasonably be expected (by me, anyway) to pay somebody to make sure they're getting things right, and especially in cases where I know people involved in the creation process actually have tattoos and ought to know enough to correct any errors, because under circumstances like that I can't see any excuse for botching things as badly as they usually do. One friend I complained to about this suggested that the reason representations of tattooing in mainstream media are such a dog's breakfast is that producers don't want to be blamed for “encouraging” folks to get tattoos . . . except that they still show tattooing, and they usually mess up by making the process look a lot quicker, cleaner, and less painful than it actually is, so I suspect it's more to do with laziness/the ignorant assumption that they already know everything they need to about tattooing (and kink, and paganism, and so on) from copying other media depictions that also got it wrong.

Of course, there's not much I can do about mainstream media (at least not until the fannish proletariat seize control of the means of production and implement a utopian meritocracy—I mean . . . *cough*), and really not a lot I can do about fandom, either. What I can do is put my knowledge out there, somewhere it might be accessed by fan writers and others who care about getting the details right, and hope it'll come in handy when you sit down to write that story about Steve Rogers tagging along the day Darcy Lewis spends her first SHIELD paycheque making a start on her half-sleeve, gets captivated by the process and the flash on the walls and decides to have his old unit insignia inscribed over his heart, or the one where Annie Edison walks in on Abed Nadir in the shower and discovers the full-colour art deco shrine to Farscape covering his back and is understandably brimming with questions (somebody please make these happen).

Please note that I am speaking from personal experience here, as a middle-class white cis woman from central Canada who got her first tattoo at age 20 and collected four more from four artists at two studios in different Canadian cities over the next seven-and-a-half years; from accompanying friends to the shop when they got inked; from talking to other friends about tattooing; from hanging out for a while in the Tattooed Knitters & Crocheters board on Ravelry and a few other online spaces; and from wandering into a whole lot of body mod shops over the years to check them out as a potential client or just out of curiosity. Some parts of the tattooing experience that I describe below are pretty universal, while others are probably more particular to my own experience; if other folks want to chime in to discuss how this does or doesn't resonate with your tattooing experiences, or to fill in any of my gaping holes of ignorance (for example home tattooing using improvised materials, cover-ups, or tattoo removal), that'd be hunky-dory. Finally, I'd like to note that this is not so much an essay as it is a bunch of loosely connected, theoretically factual statements.

I've been saying for over a year that I wanted to knit something for [community profile] kink_bingo but was never quite sure what or for which square. This year my first card included the prompt Collars, which seemed like a serendipitous opportunity to work up an alternative version of this wrist cuff pattern I designed ($3 to download the pattern on Ravelry, or KB participants can PM me and I'll email you the pdf for free :D ).

All I did to change the pattern was to knit 2.5 repeats of the charted cable pattern and leave off the "D-rings". I flubbed a few of the cable crossings (passed the cable needle back when it should have gone forward or vice versa) so it's not remotely symmetrical, but the the gauge was tight and the yarn fluffed badly enough as I was working it that I refused to rip and re-knit anything more than two rows back; next time I'd plot the crossings more carefully in advance and try to pay closer attention. A sixth "lozenge" or half-chart might not have been a bad idea, and would definitely be recommended for anyone with a neck less ittybitty than mine, though as it is I like the width of gap I have at the back and the length of cord I have left over--and just like a regular corset I retain the option of cinching it tighter if I'm ever in the mood for that restricted airway feeling.

The collar and I-cord together used less than one skein of Ella Rae Bamboo Silk, a (discontinued) 70/30 blend of bamboo and silk that sheds fluff and splits a bit but is soft as a cloud made of snuggly chinchillas.

Title: AVN-gers Assemble
Fandom: Avengers/Marvel Cinematic Universe
Characters: AVENGORGY! Bruce Banner, James "Bucky" Barnes, Clint Barton, Peggy Carter, Phil Coulson, Jane Foster, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Darcy Lewis, Loki, Pepper Potts, James "Rhodey" Rhodes, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanov, Tony Stark, Thor; basically anybody/everybody
Kink: Sex Work
Summary: The AU Where They Make Porn--a visual exploration
Notes: Digital collage juxtaposing photographic images of a rather arbitrary selection of MCU characters/cast members looking seductive or debauched or happy or nekkid or otherwise causing me to ask some combination of the important questions "what are you doing?!", "what are you wearing?!", and "WHAT IS YOUR FACE?!" with rather more explicit pictures of people who kinda look like them and anonymous body parts that could plausibly belong to them (a few that look like they're from column A are actually from column B and vice versa). I have some glimmers of an idea of what's 'actually going on here' in terms of alternative backstory/narrative, but mostly this is just pictures of hot/naked people.

Pretty sure everybody's of-age and consenting for the purposes of this art project, but I don't know where all the pictures came from (I scooped most of them up on tumblr; most didn't have source credits and I didn't track those that did) so I can't swear to it at all levels of analysis, and there's some Loki/Thor-ish (technically Hemsworth/Hiddleston) stuff that's arguably incestuous even though I'm pretty sure in this universe they didn't grow up as brothers. Standard content notes do not otherwise apply. Photos contain/hint at a number of other listed kinks incl. Pictures, Bodies and Body Parts, Exhibitionism/Exposure, Voyeurism, Pegging/Strap-Ons, Ageplay, Gender Play, Oral Fixation, Rope/Chains, Dressup, Roleplay, Authority Figures, Orgies/Decadence, Emotion Play, Foot/Shoe Fetish, Wet Messy Dirty, Masters Doms Slaves and Subs, and probably a few others.

Title: Detention
Fandom: Avengers/Marvel Cinematic Universe
Characters: Pepper Potts/Natasha Romanova
Kink: Roleplay
Summary: analog-medium drawing of Pepper and Natasha acting out a secondary school discipline scenario (includes both coloured pencil and cleaned-up regular pencil versions because some details are easier to make out in the former and some in the latter)
Notes: Two adult women playing roles of teacher or principal and (male-presenting) high school student, respectively, in a situation that could be read as involving humiliation and possibly pain- and breathplay; no other standard notes apply.

peektuurs )

Been thinking of doing an Ageplay mix for [community profile] kink_bingo since last summer; decided when I started actually pulling tracks together to narrow it down to a particular span of temporal-cultural experience and save other spans for later. I recognize that teenage feeling, even though my adolescence bore little resemblance to most of those described in the narratives within--I was neither an athlete nor much of a delinquent, and I had no significant romantic entanglements nor sexual encounters with anyone my own age or older until I was nearly out of the age range. Probably just as well--that's a lot of drama to pack into not very many years, and I have made up for some of it since. I also recognize the historical contingency of the teenage experience, and the cultural, geographic, and economic variation it demonstrates (some of that variation is illustrated here). The feeling still resonates.

Content notes: alcohol and drug use; 'characters' under the age of 18 engaging in sex with same- and cross-generational partners; dubiously consensual sex (coercion and consent under compromised conditions); mentions of self-harm and suicide; bullying, nonconsensual public humiliation and violence, gang and police violence, possible allusions to rape and murder, 'character' death.

Apparently it's time for the "ten most popular fanworks by hitcount" thing again? I didn't do it last year, probably because I was in Texas at the time, so I have no data for comparison. Also limiting this to fic because I don't post other stuff to AO3 (yet) but AO3 is the easiest gauge I have, and because I'm fairly certain that none of my non-fic fanworks are even near as viewed as these ten.
stuff wot I wrote, for the curious )

And while I'm linking to stuff on the AO3, here is an unbelievably precious and delightful, not to mention laugh-out-loud hilarious, story (by someone other than me) about living with people, domesticity, found family, disobedient brain-mouth circuits, and robots: Some Things Shouldn't Be a Chore. And while you're there, check out sabinelagrande because sabinelagrande is a synonym for awesome.
So you know how it takes me months and months and months to make fanmixes for people who commission them from me in fundraising auctions because, well, mostly because I don't work on them very often, but also because I am an obnoxious completist about them? (People to whom I owe music mixes: I promise that I will get them done ASAP after I get back from Boston. Really. I will stop adding more things to the "shortlists" and chop them down into postable shapes with haste). I threw this together in an afternoon, in between cleaning and picking at my conference paper (and am now resisting the perfectionist urge to tweak and tweak and tweak). Pah.

In conclusion,
The March Mini-Challenge at [community profile] kink_bingo was to try something you hadn't done before. blahbidiblahtoomanywords ) Here's a selection of clips from throughout the 10-episode run of The Unusuals with transcripts and commentary/meta wherein I argue that Jason Walsh (Jeremy Renner) is a sadistic dominant top who doesn't know it yet, that could count towards "gender play" as much as to "masters doms slaves & subs" because (as I shall argue below) there's a pretty heavy conflation between dominance and masculinity in Jason's mind.

The following video is about 21 minutes long, with 3-second breaks between clips so you can watch it all one go or pause between clips, as you prefer. I've mostly tried to cut around plot spoilers both for individual episodes and for series arcs as much as was viable to make my point, but the video and commentary do contain spoilers both major and minor for various events over the course of the series. I tried very hard to not just throw in every scene of Walsh being awesome or adorable or naked (that would be at least another couple hours' worth of footage). You may want to actually watch the show (all 10 episodes available free, streaming, on YouTube, thanks to before you watch/read the rest of this post.

Created in a frantic vidding binge over about three days for the "All You Can Kink" mini-challenge at [community profile] kink_bingo. Decided to try some new editing tricks while also cramming in as much of the source as possible (still had to leave out the part with Otto Gross), may have gone overboard on both counts.

* Stolen from [personal profile] commodorified, because fun.
Pick up the nearest book to you.
Turn to page 45.
The first sentence describes your sex life in 2012.

I am not unusually surrounded by bookpiles so grabbed either the topmost or the most protuberant of the three closest, which were:
Come, Thou Tortoise by Jennifer Grant: "Here is something to do if you are unslept and have a ponytail: Bring that ponytail around under your nose like a moustache."
Pretty in Punk: 25 Punk, Rock, and Goth Knitting Patterns by Alyce Benevides and Jaqueline Milles with photos by Rob Benevides: [full-page photograph of a young white woman with downcast eyes crouching gargoyle-fashion on what appears to be a rooftop in front of a background of industrial twilight (low sun, orange sky, tattered clouds, and shabby buildings) wearing a black leather aviator's cap with goggles, silver eye makeup, spiked collar with ring, black fabric bat wings, layered fishnets and ripped pantyhose, bikerish boots, and the featured knitting pattern, a "cobweb-inspired" "loose-knit tight-fit holey jumper" called "Goth Girl", over a black tank top]
The Slave by Laura Antoniou: "'Now,' he said, when she returned, 'you're in serious trouble.'"

* More Joy Day is coming up on Thursday. I have some ideas about what I'm going to do.

* Handmade meme people (you remember who you are?) who have not already PMed me with your addresses, please do so soon. I have or shortly will have stuff to mail you.
Title: Jealous of Your Cigarette
Music: "Jealous of Your Cigarette" by Hawksley Workman
Length: 2:35
Video source(s): *deep breath* Better Than Chocolate, Black Snake Moan, Blade Runner, Bound, Charlie's Angels, Clay Pigeons, Confidence, Death Proof, Dirty Pretty Things, Domino, Eastern Promises, Fight Club, Gattaca, Ginger Snaps, Grease, Hard Core Logo, Heathers, Kalifornia, Kill Bill Vol. 2, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Men with Brooms, New Waterford Girl, Out of Sight, Planet Terror, Prey for Rock & Roll, Pulp Fiction, Push, Reservoir Dogs, Secretary, Shortbus, Smokin' Aces, St. Trinian's, Strange Days, Stranger Than Fiction, Suspicious River, The Usual Suspects, Walk the Line, Watchmen, Wilby Wonderful, Women in Trouble, X-Men, X-Men 2: X-Men United, Young People Fucking . . . I think that's all of them?
Character(s): um . . . lots
Kink(s): drugs/aphrodisiacs
Summary: Frenetic multi-fandom vid of smoking (mostly cigarettes, some spliffs and cigars) in Western/English-language (mostly North American) feature films

How does a lifetime non-smoker and longtime anti-smoking nag reconcile knowing the dangers and hating the smell of tobacco smoke with finding the visual and auditory sensory dimensions (at least on film) painfully sexy? I still don't know.
Notes: Contains some shots of underage or canonically related characters that were not necessarily originally sexual but appear sexualized in this context; a few shots of self-harm with lighters or lit things (or many, if you count inhaling carcinogens etc.); various nonconsensual actions (blowing smoke in someone's face, taking away their cigarette, shaking them, lighting a cigarette off their burning hand, etc.). Also lots of quick cuts, sped-up clips, flares of light, and some specifically NSFW images and audio. Basically, ALL THE NOTES.
I was going to wait to post this with the other vids I'm making for that line (yes I am going for a five vid line during amnesty) but looked at the project again tonight while finishing my Festivid and decided it was ready to post. Did not know how to remove letterboxing when I was clipping for this video, not going to go back and correct it now. Big thanks to everybody who suggested sources for me to look at, and know that if your suggestion did not make it in it's not because it wasn't good (I just hit and then fell over the point of TOO MUCH SOURCE).

Find enclosed two mini-picspams (four pictures each) for the [community profile] kink_bingo December mini-challenge (tiny fanwork bingo), using stills from the first two episodes of Flashpoint. I apologize for the somewhat scuzzy image quality; I'm still getting control of my new computer (think I've figured out now how fix the interlacing problem, but can't be arsed to go back and re-cap). No standard content notes apply; picspams also feature uniforms, guns, and cameras.

Mini-picspam #2: Exhibitionism )
Who has two thumbs and is eager to receive her Festivids assignment? I offered a pretty long list of fandoms, so I'm curious to see what I'll get matched on. In the meantime I'm keeping those itchy vidding digits busy making stuff for [community profile] kink_bingo, to post during amnesty, while also waiting for word on actual paying work (should probably send off a round of applications for seasonal retailmonkeywork before the window closes).

Speaking of [community profile] kink_bingo, I'm pretty proud of what I accomplished this year. it ain't bragging if it's true, Dan Bern says Cassius Clay said )

Thinking about whether to sign up for any other challenges this season (dSSS, Yuletide, three_ships, etc.), or to just focus on what's already on my plate (the aforementioned + finishing auctioned music mixes, podfic, and as-yet unclaimed knitting project from [ profile] helpsomalia, and leaning toward the latter because I don't know what curveballs life might throw at my head. I will be on the lookout for small promptfests and the like, when I have spoons, and may try hosting a few or participating more in [community profile] duesouth_kink and [community profile] fic_promptly.

On that approximate note: I know I'm late jumping in on Five Acts Exchange Round Five, but I thought I'd give it a try. Basically, to play, you post a list of five acts/kinks/tropes/themes you like to read about to your own journal, along with a list of fandoms and ships you prefer to read, and then link the list back to the master list above, so that people can find it and leave you ficcy presents (or potentially presents in any medium--it's geared towards commentfic but I don't think the rules disallow other fanworks). Anyway, this is what I'm in the mood for right now )

ETA: Five Acts is fun! )

Also, I renewed my Dreamwidth subscription for another six months! Yaaaay paid features and warm feelings of supporting a good cause!

Here be 126 icons of people wearing leather jackets (with at least a smidge of leather in every frame) from the movies Bound, Death Proof, The Lookout, Penelope, and Planet Terror (kind of a random assortment, I know, but I was originally going for a multifandom vid and then an icon set from a wide range of films, but I got snap-happy with the first few sources and opted to give up on completism in source range . . . for now). Icons may contain spoilers for movies and Planet Terror set has some blood and 'splodeyness in it, but no standard content notes apply. Mostly just cropped and colour-adjusted stills with a few gifs etc.; feel free to use as bases, add text, whatever. I'm not worried about credit on these ones.

Story: A Shift in the Air

Fandom: X-Men (movieverse)
Character(s): Rogue/Logan
Kink(s): blades
Summary: Rogue can't feel anything but isolated. Logan is restlessly well-rested.
Rating: R+
Duration: 19:22
Notes: Expanding on the note on the fic link, this story contains knife(claw)play that is both sexualized and framed in a way that may evoke cutting for self-harm (but not quite both at once?). There's also some edgeplay with Rogue's power. Rogue may be legally underage (no exact dates are given). No other standard content notes apply. My second ever podfic!
